6 Dead Israelis Had Names; 600 Dead Palestinians Apparently Did Not


Six Israeli soldiers have now been killed since the army's ground offensive in Gaza began on Saturday.

On Tuesday morning during a joint activity by the Golani Brigade and Engineering Corps combat forces in the northern Gaza City, militants opened fire and killed Staff Sergeant Alexander Mashvitski, a 21 year old Engineering Corps fighter from Beer Sheva, an Israeli army statement said. 

On Monday two soldiers and an officer were killed when an Israeli tank erroneously fired on a buildng which had been taken over by between twenty and 30 soldiers.

Those killed were Major Dagan Vartman, 32, of Maale Mahash, Staff Sergeant Nitai Shatran, 21, of Jerusalem, and Corporal Yoseph Moadi, 19, of Haifa. Another twenty four soldiers were wounded, 3 of them seriously.

Also Monday Paratrooper Brigade officer, Captain Yehonatan Netanel, 27, of the Keddumim community was killed when an Israeli artillary misfired during clashes in the northern Gaza Strip.

On Sunday morning, Staff Sergeant Dvir Immanuell, 22, of Giv'at Ze'ev, was killed and another soldier was critically wounded during a gun battle with gunmen near Jabaliya, in the northern Gaza Strip. 

Health officials in Gaza said seventy one Palestinians were killed on Tuesday, taking the death past 600.
