Removal of Asbestos from Church in Aboriginal Community Advances the Cause of Polluting of Indigenous Minds with Christianity

A decaying church at the heart of an Aboriginal community in South Australia's far north-west is finally free of asbestos.

The Uniting Church building at Ernabella on the remote APY Lands has been abandoned for the many years, but it is now being restored.

Jonathan Nicholls from UnitingCare Wesley says the asbestos has worried the community because of the health risks.

"It's been, aside from being an eyesore, has been of strong concern to UnitingCare Wesley and to the community itself obviously about what is happening with this building, which is deteriorating so badly and in which there are a lot of asbestos products," he said.

But he says the removal was carried out last week, paving the way for the church's renewal.

"The asbestos has been removed from that building and a new roof and other materials have replaced those parts," he said.

"This is the first stage of the restoration of that building.

"It's probably about a third of its done I'd guess. And now the Uniting Church in northern Australia is going to manage the rest of the restoration of that building."
