"That's the price you pay for our protection." - A high-ranking US official referring to the rape of a 12-year-old Okinawan girl by three American soldiers.
YOMITAN, Okinawa -- A 66-year-old man was killed in what appears to be a hit-and-run incident caused by a member of the U.S. military here, police said.
The body of Masakazu Hokama was found among some trees a few meters away from a perimeter road near an abandoned U.S. airfield. An autopsy showed that he died from a broken neck, and fragments of glass were found on the road.
The same day, a foreigner took his car to a nearby auto repair shop to replace a broken windshield. The car -- which bears U.S. military plates -- also had strands of hair caught in the glass, according to police, who have seized the vehicle.
Police believe that the two events are linked, and are seeking the assistance of U.S. authorities.

ひき逃げ：雑木林に男性遺体 米軍関係者関与か 沖縄
沖縄県読谷村楚辺（よみたんそんそべ）の雑木林で７日、頭から血を流した男性の遺体が見つかった。県警嘉手納署は現場の状況などからひき逃げ事件とみて捜査。近くの修理工場に同日、米軍関係者の所有を示す「Ｙ」ナンバーで、フロントガラスが割れた車を外国人が持ち込んだことが分かった。県警は関連があるとみて、この車を押収し、米軍に捜査協力を要請している。
同署によると、男性は同村の無職、外間（ほかま）政和さん（６６）。死因は頸椎（けいつい）骨折だった。雑木林から約４メートルの所に旧米軍読谷補助飛行場の外周道路があり、ガラス片が散乱していた。現場の南約８００メートルには米陸軍トリイ通信施設がある。Ｙナンバー車の割れたフロントガラスには毛髪が付着していた。
通行人が７日夕、雑木林に男性が倒れているのを見つけ、１１０番通報した。Ｙナンバーは米軍人や軍属、その家族の私有車。【井本義親】
