U.S. Uses Blackmail And Threats To Get What It Wants In Okinawa

"That's the price you pay for our protection." - A high-ranking US official referring to the rape of a 12-year-old Okinawan girl by three American soldiers.

from NHK

Former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense Richard Lawless has told NHK that the United States will not agree to revise the plan to realign US forces in Japan.

He made the remark ahead of the visit to Japan of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton next Monday. She is expected to sign an agreement to steadily implement the plan.

Lawless was in charge of negotiations with Japan on the realignment of US forces. He told NHK that the United States made compromises to accept the plan presented by the Japanese government after more than 2 years of discussions. He stressed that the relocation of the US Marine Corps Air Station in Futenma to Nago City must go ahead, and that a failure to do so will lead to the scrapping of the transfer of US Marines from Okinawa to Guam.

The Okinawa prefectural government is calling for runways at the proposed site in Nago to be built offshore, a move that will delay the relocation.

Regarding Afghanistan, Lawless said it is natural for the administration of US President Barack Obama to ask Japan for more contributions to the war in Afghanistan.
