Aboriginal Couple Assaulted; Australian Police "Indifferent"

from ABC

Police say they charged a 21-year-old man on Saturday in relation to a complaint raised by Muriel and Gary Campbell, after an incident that occurred when they were leaving Bermagui Bowling Club on New Year's Day morning.

They allege they were attacked by two men and reported the incident to police.

Since then, a group of concerned residents wrote to Premier Nathan Rees and Police Minister Tony Kelly calling for an investigation into alleged police inaction on the matter.

The group says the delay in interviewing and charging anyone is due to the attitudes of some far south coast police, that a separate form of justice exists for the Aboriginal community.

The man, from Holsworthy in Sydney's south, has been charged over two months since the alleged assault.

He is due to face the local court in May.

The ABC has made attempts to contact the Commander of the far south coast local area command to confirm whether the group's claims are being investigated.
