Yet Another Australian Aborigine Dies In Police Custody

from ABC News

A coronial inquest into the death in custody of an Aboriginal elder from the Central Desert will resume today in Kalgoorlie, in south-eastern Western Australia.

Mr Ward died in Kalgoorlie hospital in January last year after being transferred in the back of a prison van from Laverton.

Temperatures on the day were mid-40 degrees Celsius and the journey lasted for four hours.

In Warburton earlier this week, the inquest heard the airconditioning in the back of the van was not working and that Mr Ward died of heatstroke.

Mr Ward's family testified he was a hard working and respected elder.

The inquiry will today hear from police officers who arrested Mr Ward for drink driving and officers from the private transport company Global Solutions Limited which transported him to Kalgoorlie.
