Today’s Action Against Connex

by Sonja Karakr

At 7:00 am this morning, 17 volunteers in white T-shirts descended on Flinders Street Station in Melbourne, Australia for the first official distribution of the “Dump Connex”  leaflets.  Within two hours, some 5,000 had been distributed to Melbourne commuters who were only too eager to take them. Some even returned to ask for extras for distribution in their workplaces.

The response was overwhelmingly supportive, despite being the early morning rush hour.  Nor did rain deter commuters from signing our petition or asking us for more information.  Cancelled trains had only made them  all the more furious with Connex, and few had any problems with adding human rights violations to the already long list of grievances against
Connex.

The next major distribution will take place at Melbourne Central on Friday afternoon 27 March at 4:00 pm.  Please come and join us. The more people we have, the more we can distribute.  A sea of white T-shirts with “SACK CONNEX” emblazoned across the front would be a show stopper.  We had so many requests for T-shirts today and they are available in all sizes until they run out.   They can be purchased for $15 at the rostered distribution meets or requested by phoning Moammar on 03 9818 5080. People interested can also order these T-shirts for their own campaigns against Connex.

Also, please visit our website http://www.boycottconnex.org for the latest information and updates, as well as lots of background reading.  Besides the distribution of leaflets, we are sending the media and all Victoria’s state parliamentarians - in both the upper and lower houses - a comprehensive dossier on the reasons behind the campaign: the media to report on the campaign and our politicians to support a motion against Connex in Parliament.   This dossier can be read on, or downloaded from, the website.

A big thank you to all volunteers who came out on a dark, wet morning with cheerful smiles and boundless enthusiasm.  It has been a fantastic start to the campaign and the momentum is bound to grow.  Best of luck and thanks also to those distributing at their local stations – we are with you in spirit.
