Australia: Ayers Rock Desecrated, Tourists Relieve Themselves

Darwin (Australia), 8 Sept. – Mass tourism is desecrating Ayers Rock, the Aborigine's sacred mountain in the Australian outback. Several tourists have been caught relieving themselves on the mountain, with the excuse that there are no public toilets in the area. Tour operator Andrew Simpson said that ''most of them even carry toilet paper from home''. The Australian authorities are studying a project to protect Ayers Rock, including a ban on climbing the mountain. Australian Premier Kevin Rudd is against this idea however. He called the idea of keeping tourists far away from the monolith ''very sad''. The rock, called Uluru ('Strange') by the Aborigines, was officially given back to them in 1985. Around 350,000 tourists visit the place every year.
